Once again very topical: do you still have unused devices lying around that are still suitable as school/library computers? Maybe not in your own home, but with relatives? Labdoo accepts laptop donations and sends them to where they are needed, currently perhaps not far from your front door. Labdoo.org brings laptops where they are still needed.
Check whether the device is good enough, register, enter data, arrange drop-off or pick-up.
Optionally, computer-savvy people who are not installing a Linux operating system for the first time can prepare the device themselves, including professional data deletion, everything is documented in the Sanitation Guide / Step by Step Installation Method.
TODO add links to issues encountered while preparing an acer laptop previously running Windows 10:
- setting a hostname with underscore
- disable secure boot to enable 3rd party device drivers (needed for acer aspire)
- install acer touchpad driver on ubuntu mate
- ubuntu mate
- ubuntu
Here is an unofficial image variation that you might want to use as a desktop background.
Update: If your device does not qualify for Labdoo, a donation and repair initiative like Repair Circle Berlin might be an alternative.
